Off the Grid in the Arizona Desert
|
Hello Again, Reader! We made our way out of New Mexico and into the land of saguaros and sun-baked earth...ARIZONA! We made a pit stop outside of Apache Junction so we could get some warranty work done on the new trailer. I love the landscape here with the endless skies and mountain peaks. I will add that the dust from the holiday weekend OHVers was pretty intense and I'm glad it was only a couple of nights! The brief stop did give me a chance to wander among the towering saguaros, their arms outstretched like ancient guardians of the desert. As the sun slipped low on the horizon, a burst of golden light flared behind one, a moment so fleeting, yet full of quiet enchantment. The dust hung in the air, and in the stillness I was reminded why this rugged, sun-scorched landscape always makes my heart happy. Southwest of SomewhereSalome, AZ isn't a big place. You can't quite miss it in the blink of an eye, but you will if you are zipping down Hwy 60 and not paying attention! But what the town has to offer makes it completely worth a stop. We towed the trailer out to our friends' property and settled in for the campfire chats and potluck meals. We are enjoying the slow days and star-filled nights, reacquainting ourselves with the distant peaks of the Harquahala Mountains. As the sun rises and sets, the gold and red tones are reflected on the peak making it one of my favorite things to watch (and photograph) each day! If Google hasn't misled me, this is Harquahala Peak but it could also be Winchester Peak. I'll figure it out and report back! We have several adventures planned from our Salome basecamp, including the California sections of our Rt. 66 adventure. I'm excited to bring you along for those adventures, and more! Hit reply and tell me where's the most out of the way place you've ever camped...and why you loved it! Until next week!
