Meet our new truck + a few of Ohio’s historic bridges

Chronicles from the Road

Issue 115

Hey there Reader!

I hope fall and cooler temperatures have arrived in your neck of the woods. We are in northeast Ohio, and it is the perfect fall weather!

We found some time between truck shopping and adulting (i.e., working) to explore the area a bit, and it was beautiful with its emerging fall colors!

Here's a recap of the week!

Photo of the Week - Lake Erie Shoreline

Our campground was not far from Lake Erie, so we took the opportunity to ride over and see one of the Great Lakes. I loved the view of the shoreline with the fall colors peaking out.

Covered Bridges

There were three covered bridges in the area to explore. West Liberty Covered Bridge crosses Cowels Creek in Geneva and is the shortest at a mere 18'.

Harpersfield Covered Bridge crosses the Grand River in Ashtabula County. It is one of 17 driveable covered bridges. If you zoom in to see the other side, you can see the steel section added after a flood washed away the land at the north end in 1913.

I found some great spiderwebs and views of the river here!

The last bridge we explored, Mechanicsville Road Covered Bridge, claims to be the oldest, but the internet had many such claims, so who really knows! It was built in 1857 and does seem to be the oldest in Ashtabula County. It was my favorite of the three because it seemed as if most of the historical aspects had been retained.

Views from the Jefferson, OH area

As I mentioned in the beginning, we found time to explore the area and take in the fall colors, which helped reduce the stress of Walter White's (our truck's) untimely demise and the necessary shopping for the next vehicle.

The Newell Bridge over the Ohio River is a privately owned suspension bridge that connects Newell, WV, to East Liverpool, OH. I guess that is why they can charge a toll to cross it, but thankfully, it was only $1 for motorcycles and $2 for trucks! It was initially built for trolley traffic before being adapted for automobiles. It's a bit of a white-knuckle ride on the bike since you can see the river through the bridge!

Last but certainly not least, with considerable help from our salesman at the Dodge dealership in Newell, WV, we found a new truck. She is a 2025 Dodge Ram 3500 Big Horn in forged blue. She's a beauty! It will take some time to figure out all the technical features, but Jody seems pretty happy with it so far, which is pretty important!

Until next week!

PS: It's hard to believe it's been a year since we were exploring Southern California! If you missed the post from last year, check it out!

PSS: Apologies for the weird mistakes in last week's issue. Not only did I proof it, but so did Jody. We could have missed them, but it seems unlikely, so I'm blaming technology. 😂
