I hope you have had some time this summer to wander. Exploring new areas and learning about the small towns that remind me of my childhood continues to be one of my favorite things to do.
This week I am taking you on a tour of South Jersey, from the shores to the diners and all the fun in between. Basecamp at Thousand Trails Chestnut Lake in Port Republic, NJ gave us a great spot to explore the garden state.
We explored the area on two wheels, following Hwy 9 through coastal towns and marshlands, snapping shots of quiet bays and beautiful tree-lined roads. And of course, we sampled some must-try Jersey eats at diners that serve nostalgia with a side of pancakes. It was a delightful reminder of the elegance of the old days.
Let’s roll into the highlights!
Under the Boardwalk, Atlantic City
Photo of the Week
I'm a sucker for the view from under a pier. I love the textures of the wood and the splashes from the waves as they crash against the pilings.
Boardwalk Vibes in Atlantic City
When I discovered we were mere minutes from Atlantic City, we hopped on the bike and headed over to check out the most famous city in New Jersey (in my opinion, of course!). Atlantic City stands out for its boardwalk, casinos, and history as a coastal escape. The boardwalk was built in 1870 and is the oldest in the U.S. Did you know it was originally designed to keep sand out of hotel lobbies?
It was fascinating to see casinos, beaches, and stores selling saltwater taffy so close together! But the real treat was stopping in at Bar 32 for a delicious chocolate adult beverage! I had a chocolate/peanut butter shot but Jody was the real winner with his decadent "Death by Chocolate" which came with a souvenir mug we got to take home.
Wheels, Wind & Waffles
We stayed off the Garden State Parkway as much as possible to avoid both the drivers more interested in their phones than staying in their lanes. Instead we road down the unofficial "Coastal Highway" of US Route 9. It took us through some fantastic scenery of salt marshes and pinelands. We saw the quaint towns of Waretown and Tuckerton along the coast and found a few cool diners along the way. We even stopped at a Farmer's Market!
